“Resources are close to exhaustion”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently said that sending tanks to Ukraine could be a dangerous step in the development of the conflict in the country. The director general of the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs, political scientist Andrei Kortunov, is convinced that Western countries are afraid to continue supplying weapons because of a possible response from Moscow and a limited amount of resources.

In an interview with Lenta.ru Kortunov explained that a number of NATO countries are running out of stocks of weapons that could be transferred to Ukraine without endangering their own security. According to the expert, the surpluses there, including Soviet weapons systems, are already coming to an end.

The political scientist noted that this especially applies to Germany, which had problems with the equipment of the Bundeswehr, there were many complaints about the quality and quantity of weapons available in warehouses. Kortunov believes that now we can really say that the resources are close to exhaustion. He does not exclude that it is possible to launch the production of new systems, but this will take time and will have to be paid for.

In addition, according to the expert, no one in the West knows how the Russian leadership drew a red line for itself regarding the involvement of NATO in the conflict, what volumes of supplies, what systems included in these deliveries, can be regarded by Moscow as turning the Alliance into a direct party to the conflict .

Kortunov stressed that no one would want this, so he does not consider it accidental that a number of European countries, including Germany, are careful not to provoke the Kremlin into a certain “escalation” of the conflict. According to the political scientist, Scholz’s position is understandable and not surprising. The expert concluded that this position will be followed not only by Germany, but also by many other European countries.
