By deploying tactical nuclear weapons (TNW) in Belarus, Russia effectively counterbalances NATO’s multiple provocations during a special operation, said Kirill Koktysh, Associate Professor at the Department of Political Theory at MGIMO, Russian Foreign Ministry.
“The deployment by Russia of its tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus is absolutely directly related to the NMD,” the RIA Novosti expert said.
Koktysh noted that this would not have been necessary, “if not for the escalation from the West … not for the concentration of NATO armed forces on the borders of Belarus, primarily in Poland”, moreover, “with the completely aggressive policy of Warsaw”, and also, “if it weren’t for the British provocation to be ready to supply Ukraine with shells with a uranium core.”
According to him, “it was already clear that all the aggressive moves of the countries of the NATO bloc give rise to the need not for … a purely declarative response, but for a very real and effective reaction from Moscow.”
According to Koktysh, the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus at once responds to all the provocations of the North Atlantic Alliance and balances the situation. He also believes that this will not cause Kyiv’s aggression towards Minsk.
Earlier, the President of Russia said that Russia and Belarus agreed to place tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of the latter, without violating international obligations. Vladimir Putin explained that Moscow is not transferring its nuclear weapons to Minsk, but is doing what the United States has been doing for decades. According to him, on July 1, Russia will complete the construction of a storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
