Political scientist Tarasov: Pashinyan’s claims to the CSTO are related to the tense situation in Armenia
The claims of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) are related to the tense situation in Yerevan. The possibility of the republic leaving the CSTO was commented on by an expert on the Middle East and the Caucasus, political scientist Stanislav Tarasov in a conversation with the radio “TVNZ”.
The expert recalled that at the end of last year, Armenia signed a declaration that defined the integrity of Azerbaijan and the assignment of Nagorno-Karabakh to this republic. According to Tarasov, according to the CSTO charter, Russia and other members of the organization are responsible for the territory of Armenia within the parameters of the borders they recognized, that is, those established at the time of the collapse of the USSR.
“So everything is his (Nikol Pashinyan. – Note ed.) the reasoning is demagogic in nature,” the expert shared his opinion.
The political scientist noted that Azerbaijan, in turn, did not actually confirm the recognition of this declaration and proposes to hold negotiations on border demarcation. At the same time, according to Tarasov, this is impossible if countries are at war. First, he explained, it is necessary to sign a peace treaty, enter the phase of ending the war, and then agree on the definition of territories.
He also expressed the opinion that Pashinyan’s claims to the Organization are related to the tension in Yerevan, since “the country smells of war,” Armenia is blocking the CSTO’s activities in relation to Azerbaijan.
The political scientist believes that due to the sentiments of Armenia and the policies of the West, the republic’s exit from the CSTO is likely. In turn, military political scientist Andrei Koshkin suggested that Armenia’s withdrawal from the organization could lead to its disappearance.
