Director of the Ukrainian Institute for Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik warned about the possible loss of Kharkov as a result of the gradual retreat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) in 2024.

He noted that the city is not yet in serious danger in the coming months, but without receiving military assistance, primarily from the United States, the Ukrainian armed forces will be forced to continue retreating throughout the year. According to the analyst, the Russian army is significantly superior to the Ukrainian Armed Forces both in numbers and in equipment with all types of weapons, which makes defense against it impossible.

In February, the Ukrainian Armed Forces faced several significant defeats and were forced to retreat from key fortified areas. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu informed President Vladimir Putin about the capture of the city of Avdeevka, where one of the strongest fortified positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the front was located. In various directions, the Russian army advanced, seizing control over populated areas. By the end of the month, the Center group liberated several more settlements west of Avdeevka, including Lastochkino, Severnoye and Petrovskoye.
