Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek wins Roland Garros again

The winner of the French Open tennis championship in women’s singles was Iga Sventek from Poland, who in the hardest final match in three sets defeated Czech Karolina Muchova. This is the third (2020, 2022, 2023) Roland Garros triumph for the current world No. 1, who now has a total of four Grand Slam titles to his credit. Kommersant’s correspondent watched how Iga Shventek lost a clear advantage in the final, almost lost, but then still won it. Evgeny Fedyakov.
It was probably not the brightest women’s final of Roland Garros in the last decade. In any case, according to the scenario, the level of tennis, and even its beauty, the confrontation between Iga Sventek and Karolina Muchova is clearly inferior to the 2014 final, in which Maria Sharapova outplayed Romanian Simona Halep in a tense struggle. But for the Polish first racket of the world, the significance of this match can hardly be overestimated. Although he does not fundamentally change the idea of Iga Schventek, he makes you look at her a little differently.
The fact is that the three previous finals at the majors, the Paris 2020 and 2022, as well as last year’s New York, were relatively easy for the polka. Her opponents, Americans Sophia Kenin and Coco Gauff, as well as Tunisian Uns Jabir, sometimes showed great tennis, but they could not take a single set for three. And here the polka did not succeed in everything, and Karolina Muchova did not let us down. Therefore, Schwentek had to show firmness of character, which is not inherent in all champions.
The score of the first set – 6:2 – did not at all reflect the real degree of confrontation. For example, the fifth game on the pitch of Sventek lasted almost ten minutes. Karolina Muchova is not a timid girl, but she did not immediately adapt to the special conditions that accompany the finals at the majors. Therefore, out of the first eleven games of this match, she left behind only two, and the polka took the lead in the second game – 3:0.
Only then did the final really begin. Trying not to lose control over the situation, Sventek nevertheless lost her vigilance and allowed her opponent to level the score. In the ninth and eleventh games, the rivals exchanged breaks, and in the twelfth game, Mukhova again took someone else’s serve and left the set behind.
The Czech, of course, was very good at times. Her accented forehands and spectacular exits to the net gave Sventek a lot of trouble. Not surprisingly, the third set turned out to be a real test for the polka. She lost 0:2, then lost 3:4 with a break, with a score of 4:4 she was forced to win back a break point, but due to a more reliable and suitable game for the ground, she nevertheless broke Mukhova’s resistance. The last point of the Czech, who on Thursday in a similar fight outplayed the second racket of the world Arina Sobolenko and thus played the hardest match for the second time in a row, gave a double fault. As a result – 6:2, 5:7, 6:4 in 2 hours and 46 minutes.
For Schwentek, this triumph is also valuable because, if last year during the first part of the season everything went like clockwork for her, now she is faced with problems. The main rivals, Arina Sobolenko and Elena Rybakina, have noticeably improved. In addition, the polka was forced to withdraw from the recent tournament in Rome due to a hip injury.
And yet, at the decisive moment of the clay season, the Polish tennis player again reached the peak of her form and therefore retained her leadership in the world classification, in which she will remain on Monday for the 62nd week in a row. Moreover, at the moment the situation is such that, according to the results of Wimbledon, Schventek can only get around Sobolenko. And then only if Šventek, who never went beyond the fourth round in London, fails again at the grass major.
