Polish Foreign Minister signs note to Germany demanding reparations

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau officially signed a note demanding that Germany pay reparations for World War II.
Last month, Poland’s authorities estimated that Germany owed the country 6.2 trillion złoty ($1.26 trillion). In turn, in Germany, which is Poland’s largest trading partner, they said that the issue of reparations had long been settled.
“This note expresses the position of the Polish Foreign Ministry that the parties must immediately take measures to resolve the issue of the consequences of German aggression and occupation,” Rau said at a press conference.
Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Lukasz Jasina told reporters that Rau would discuss the issue with his German counterpart Annalena Berbock during her visit to Warsaw.
Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party said the agreement could not be considered valid because Poland could not agree on fair compensation. Calls for compensation have been renewed since the party came to power in 2015…
Such a militant stance towards Germany, often used by the ruling party to arouse a sense of injustice among voters, has strained relations with Berlin.
The German government has repeatedly stated that it does not intend to make payments to Poland: Berlin is confident that there is no reason to question Poland’s refusal of reparations in 1953.
