Poland and the EU disagree over different ideas about reforms

Poland accuses the European Union (EU) as a whole and its leaders – Germany and France – of imperialism. An article with such invectives in the German newspaper Die Welt was published on August 10 by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He argues that against the backdrop of Moscow’s “aggressive policy”, the EU lacks the political will to effectively confront Russia. Berlin and officials in Brussels, according to Morawiecki, do not heed advice from Warsaw, which “is much more experienced in matters of relations with Russia.” This happens because Germany and France allegedly trampled on the principle of equality of all EU countries.
Relations between Poland and the EU deteriorated sharply when, in July, Brussels refused to allocate 35 billion euros to Warsaw for post-COVID economic recovery, citing “insufficient measures in the field of justice reform,” The Guardian reports. Judicial reform was criticized by European structures, as a result of which a government-controlled commission could influence the appointment of judges. The powers of the commission were weakened, but this did not satisfy Brussels.
