Played by Russian pranksters, Klitschko and the mayor of Berlin checked the authenticity of each other

During a recent conversation, Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffay and Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko half-jokingly made sure that each of them is who he claims to be. When asked by Giffay if she was talking to the real Klitschko, he replied with a pronounced accent that he considered himself such, and asked if he was talking to the real mayor of Berlin.
“Yes, you’re talking to a real mayor of Berlin,” Giffey said.
In June, the pranksters set up a video call with Giffey on behalf of Klitschko, using deepfake computer technology to create an animated “copy” of a real person. The conversation lasted half an hour, after which Giffay suspected that she was not talking to Klitschko and interrupted the conversation. The offer for a video conference was sent out from a fake e-mail.
