Reuters reported that scientists have discovered on the island of Trindade, which is located in the Atlantic Ocean, rocks made from plastic debris.
According to the publication, molten plastic intertwined with stones on the island, which is located 1140 kilometers from the state of Espirito Santo. All these data testify to the growing influence of man on the geological cycles of the Earth.
“This is a horrific discovery. At the moment, pollution has reached geology,” said Fernanda Avelar Santos, a geologist from the Federal University of Parana.
The scientists want to conduct chemical tests to find out what types of plastic are found in rocks called “plastiglomerates” because they are made up of a mixture of sedimentary granules and other debris held together by plastic.
