Pistorius remembered how the Russian language prevented him from becoming a ZSU driver

Knowledge of the Russian language at one time prevented the current Minister of Defense of Germany, Boris Pistorius, from becoming the driver of the Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (ZSU) during military service in the Bundeswehr. The head of the German military department himself spoke about this in an interview with the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
According to Pistorius, he was supposed to go to serve in the Bundeswehr in 1978. By this time, he had graduated from high school and received a trade education, so he was allowed to finish his studies. Pistorius was drafted into the army in 1980. As a result, he was the only high school graduate among the recruits.
At first, they wanted to train Pistorius as a driver of the Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled gun. However, then a sergeant approached him and called to the commander. It turned out that the regiment commander was looking for a new driver. Having learned that Pistorius was taking the Russian language at school, the commander decided to take him as his driver, since he himself also studied Russian.
