Petersburg treasure hunter sentenced to five and a half years in prison for discrediting the army

The Moscow District Court of St. Petersburg sentenced treasure hunter Oleg Belousov to five and a half years in prison in a penal colony for reporting on a special operation in Ukraine in the chat of treasure hunters on the VKontakte social network, a Kommersant correspondent reports from the court. The messages contained information that contradicts the official statements of the RF Ministry of Defense.
The court found him guilty of discrediting the Russian armed forces (part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, up to ten years in prison) and of publicly disseminating incitement to extremism (part 2 of article 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, up to five years in prison). Under the first article, the court will appoint five years in prison, under the second – three years. The total term will be five years and six months. The time that Oleg Belousov spent in a pre-trial detention center will be deducted from it, at the rate of one day in a pre-trial detention center for a day and a half in a colony. It’s about thirteen and a half months. In St. Petersburg, this is the first sentence under Art. 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
The prosecutor asked for nine and a half years in prison for both articles. The lawyer said that his client should be acquitted, as the verdict is “untenable”.
In his last speech, Oleg Belousov stated that he was “not a murderer, not a rapist, not a thief and not a Nazi.” “All war criminals must be punished. My words are taken out of context. Please excuse me. Be kind,” he concluded his speech.
Oleg Belousov has been in a pre-trial detention center since the end of June 2022. Oleg Belousov’s acquaintance Sergei Chmykhun reported to the law enforcement agencies about the messages. On January 27, Oleg Belousov was added to the list of extremists and terrorists.
