Petersburg court banned distribution of Sartre’s quote about anti-communists

On March 28, the Primorsky District Court of St. Petersburg held a final hearing on a lawsuit filed by the city prosecutor’s office demanding that a phrase by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, in which he gave a negative assessment of anti-communists, be banned. The process lasted for about ten months, and the last meeting took place in fifteen minutes, of which the judge spent five in the deliberation room.
Initially, the defendants in the lawsuit were 42 people, but by the last meeting their number was reduced to 6 – as many domain owners were able to establish the prosecutor’s office. This is due to the fact that most of the sites on which the quote was posted have removed it or have been blocked by Roskomnadzor for other reasons.
During the interim hearings, the state prosecutor insisted that it was impossible to identify the owners of some sites. At the penultimate meeting, which took place on March 21, the court withdrew from the case the communist Alexei Filippov, who in 2022 fined for 10 thousand rubles. under Art. 20.3.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses on inciting hatred and enmity for publishing a quote on his page on VKontakte. Filippov deleted the entry from his page, and the prosecutor’s office decided to withdraw the claims.
