Peskov urged to remember the merits of Isinbayeva to Russia – Kommersant

The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, called the sports community’s harsh reaction to the statements of Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva, who called the rank of major assigned to her nominal. According to the Kremlin representative, it is necessary to remember the merits of the athlete to the country.

“It so happens that, not knowing what was discussed, we just fall on the athlete, whom we were proud of recently. She did not condemn anything, she did not criticize anyone, she fulfills her functions, where she lives, in the end, it does not matter at all. In honor of her, our anthem was played so many times and our flag was hoisted, that this must be remembered and must not be forgotten, ”said TASS Mr Peskov.

In June 2023, the status of a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Elena Isinbayeva was suspended. The IOC conducted an audit, including in connection with the assignment of the athlete to the rank of major after the conclusion of a five-year contract to serve in the Russian army in 2015.

July 17 Isinbayeva reportedthat will resume work in the IOC. According to her, those ranks “that they talk about are nominal,” since she has never served in the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin named such an “assessment of military rank” is unacceptable.
