Peskov urged “not to fall down” on Isinbayeva

The sports community reacted harshly to the statement of athlete Yelena Isinbayeva about the military rank assigned to her, but “she is performing her functions.” This opinion on Thursday, July 20, was expressed by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
According to the Kremlin speaker, “without knowing what was discussed, we simply fall upon the athlete, whom we were proud of just recently,” although Isinbayeva did not condemn or criticize anyone.
Peskov also recalled how many times the Russian anthem was played in honor of Isinbayeva at international competitions, and urged not to forget about it, RBC reports.
Earlier, the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin condemned the attitude of two-time Olympic champion in pole vaulting Elena Isinbayeva to military rank. She stated that she had never served in the Russian Armed Forces and called her rank of major, which she was awarded for her performances in CSKA, “nominal.”
Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Svetlana Zhurova did not rush to condemn Isinbayeva and called on her to publicly clarify her position, and until then “it’s all a twisted story”.
