The transfer of Azov militants (an organization recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation) was not raised at the talks between the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This was announced by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
“The speech did not come. This is a rather sensitive topic, and usually, of course, it is not discussed in such formats. There are authorized departments from both sides, they are conducting these negotiations. They are always very sensitive and are always conducted in a very sensitive mode,” he said.
Peskov specified that talks between the defense ministers of Russia and Turkey were held separately in Sochi.
On August 2, Putin and Erdogan had a telephone conversation, during which, in particular, they agreed to meet. Then the leaders of the two countries also discussed the grain deal, from which Russia withdrew on July 17. The topic of transferring the Azov commanders to Ukraine was not raised during the telephone conversation, Peskov emphasized.
Kyiv informed about the return of “Azov” to the combat zone in mid-August. In September 2022, Russia and Ukraine, mediated by Turkey, exchanged prisoners, including more than a hundred fighters and five Azov commanders. Then the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the militants would remain in Turkey until the end of hostilities in Ukraine.
