Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the Kremlin had seen the conclusion of the expert council of the Tretyakov Gallery and specialists from the Russian Academy of Sciences that the Trinity icon could not be exhibited on June 4 in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, as it needed restoration.
“The topic is very serious. We will talk with experts, discuss this topic,” he said.
Answering the question whether Vladimir Putin knew about the bad condition of the icon when he decided to transfer it to the Russian Orthodox Church, the Kremlin speaker said that “such conclusions were not given to the Kremlin before.”
However, after the return of the Trinity from the Trinity-Sergius Lavra last year, experts reported that the state of the masterpiece had worsened.
Currently, the icon is in the restoration workshop of the Tretyakov Gallery.
