Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the situation at Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, where airspace was closed on Tuesday, February 28, Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said.
“The president has complete information on this matter. It would be wrong for us to talk about it. Those who are responsible for this should do this, they should speak,” he said. Peskov also urged to focus on information from official sources. “Let’s focus on the statements and clarifications that have already been or will follow from the aviation authorities or the military,” he said.
The spokesman declined to comment on the possible connection between the closure of the airspace over St. Petersburg and the fire at the oil depot in Tuapse with the incidents that occurred in Belarus. Peskov recommended to apply for an analysis of what happened to the Ministry of Defense.
Earlier today, the government of St. Petersburg temporarily suspended the reception and departure of aircraft at Pulkovo Airport. Airspace is now open. According to the Baza and 112 Telegram channels, this happened due to the discovery of an unidentified flying object. As Fontanka noted, it was discovered 160-200 km from St. Petersburg. Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the training of air defense forces over St. Petersburg.
