Peskov: Russia is closely monitoring the situation with the US public debt

Russia is closely monitoring the situation in the US and global economy, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation.

At a conference call, journalists asked Peskov whether the Russian Federation was worried about the situation with exceeding the US national debt limit, or, in the context of the isolation of the Russian economy, Moscow “looks at it from the outside.”

“No, we, of course, do not look from the outside. We see that, of course, like the world economy, the American economy is now experiencing certain problems. This is high inflation, continuation of inflationary expectations at a fairly high level. Of course, we are monitoring everything very carefully, all our fiscal departments,” Peskov replied.

At the same time, the Kremlin spokesman noted that such problems arise in the US economy “with enviable regularity”, but so far Washington has not found a solution.

Earlier today, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen statedthat the government of the country may be left without funds to pay off payments by June 1 if Congress does not increase or suspend the national debt limit. According to the NYT, after Yellen’s statement, US President Joe Biden called four leaders in Congress and scheduled a meeting to discuss financial issues on May 9.

If the issue with the limit is not resolved, the US will face default on the debt. The newspaper, citing a representative of the US Treasury, noted that as of April 30, Washington had about $ 300 billion in cash.

This is not the first time the US has reached the national debt limit. In December 2021, Biden raised the limit by $2.5 trillion to $31.4 trillion. However, already in January 2023, the limit was reached again.
