Peskov made it clear that the “nuclear umbrella” extends to new territories of Russia

Russia is working on the integration of new territories, they have become an integral part of the country. This was announced by presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, answering the question whether the “nuclear umbrella” extends to the newly annexed regions. According to Mr. Peskov, their security is ensured in the same way as in other territories of the Russian Federation.

“You know that they were annexed relatively recently, so work is now underway to integrate new territories into the legal system, the security system of the Russian Federation, the economic system, the social system, and so on and so forth. But all these territories are an integral part of the Russian Federation,” Mr. Peskov said. “They are all protected, security is provided exactly at the same level as the rest of the territory of the Russian Federation.”

Dmitry Peskov was also asked about U.S. claims that they had not received notice of strategic nuclear exercises planned in Russia. “There is an established system for notifying notifications of such exercises. And this is being carried out through the Ministry of Defense,” the press secretary of the Russian president replied.

The LPR, DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions were annexed to Russia following referendums held on September 23–27. In June 2020, the President signed decree “On the fundamentals of the state policy of the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear deterrence”. Paragraph 19 lists the conditions under which the use of nuclear weapons is permissible. This is, in particular, the impact of the enemy on critical state or military facilities and a threat to the existence of the state.
