Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov did not answer the question about the possible assignment of the rank of Marshal of the Russian Federation to the Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, who on the eve of January 11, appointed commander of the joint grouping of troops of the military operation in Ukraine.
Answering a question from journalists during a press call about whether the Kremlin has plans to award the title of Marshal of the Russian Federation to someone from the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff or personally to Mr. Gerasimov, Dmitry Peskov said: “I have no information about the existence of such plans.”
On January 11, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu appointed Valery Gerasimov commander of the Joint Group of Forces of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Sergei Surovikin, who previously headed the group, became Mr. Gerasimov’s deputy.
The highest personal military rank of the Russian armed forces – Marshal of the Russian Federation was approved on February 11, 1993. The title is awarded by the President of the country for special services to the state. For the first and only time, the title of Marshal of the Russian Federation was awarded to the former Minister of Defense Igor Sergeyev in 1997.
