By the meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky, the foundation of agreements should be built, which is not being discussed now, Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

“As for the Putin-Zelensky meeting, nothing has changed here. Nobody needs a meeting for the sake of a meeting. In order for such a meeting to take place and for the very idea of ​​such a meeting to be on the agenda, work needs to be done and the foundation for those agreements that can be fixed at the highest level needs to be built, ”Peskov believes (quote according to RIA Novosti).

Since the beginning of the special operation, Russia and Ukraine have held four rounds of negotiations, but after a meeting in Istanbul on March 29, the process was frozen. On May 17, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said that Ukraine had actually withdrawn from the negotiations.

After that, the Russian authorities repeatedly stated that Russia did not refuse negotiations with Ukraine. At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized that Western countries are hindering this process by pumping weapons to Ukraine and thereby prolonging the conflict.

On August 26, the head of Zelensky’s office, Mikhail Podolyak declaredthat the President of Ukraine opposes negotiations. According to Podolyak, in the current situation they will become a “death sentence” for Ukraine. September 2 on the website of the President of Ukraine was published the decree signed by Zelensky, which effectively abolishes the Ukrainian delegation to the Trilateral Contact Group (TCG) to resolve the conflict in Donbass.
