Amendments to the law on presidential elections are necessary due to the “special situation,” including in new regions of Russia, said presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov. At the same time, he emphasized that the date of the presidential elections has not yet been set, but “they are approaching and will take place in any case.”
“A certain special situation, including in our new regions, requires additional legislative initiatives and decisions, and this is, in fact, what is happening,” Dmitry Peskov commented during a press call on the work on amendments to the law on presidential elections in Russia.
Draft amendments to the State Duma on October 5 contributed a group of United Russia parliamentarians led by Senator Andrei Klishas and Deputy Pavel Krasheninnikov. First reading of the bill was accepted 17 October. October 23 State Duma Committee on State Construction recommended pass the bill in the second reading.
Most of the changes proposed to the election law repeat the norms already included in the laws “On the Election of State Duma Deputies” and “On Basic Guarantees of Electoral Rights.” In particular, one of the amendments allows the authorities to allocate money from their budgets to pay members of election commissions and inform voters. It is also proposed to allow only observers and accredited media representatives working in editorial offices on the basis of an employment contract to take photographs and videos at polling stations.
