Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov did not comment on the situation around the statement by the commander of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District, Major General Ivan Popov, about his removal.
“We don’t comment. Still, we are talking about the military, about the Ministry of Defense. Therefore, we recommend that you go there for comments,” Peskov said.
Formerly member of the State Duma Defense Committee Andrey Gurulev published in his Telegram channel, Popov’s audio message, in which he talks about his resignation. According to him, at a meeting with senior officials, he frankly “outlined all the problematic issues that exist today in the army.” After that, an order was signed to remove Popov from command of the army, his place was taken by Lieutenant General Denis Lyamin. Now Popov is waiting for new job offers, he added.
Andrey Turchak, head of the working group on the special operation, Secretary of the General Council of United Russia declaredthat the general’s appeal was non-public, and the creation of a political show around this statement should remain on Gurulev’s conscience. Senator Andrei Klishas, in turn thinksthat the army is out of politics. “The political subjectivity of the army is expressed in the will of the supreme commander in chief, the President of Russia, and nothing else,” he said.
