The information that the deputy head of the presidential administration of Russia Dmitry Kozak, at the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine, ensured Kyiv’s consent not to join NATO, but the agreement was rejected, is completely wrong, said presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“This has absolutely nothing to do with reality. There was nothing like it. This is completely wrong information, ”said the Kremlin spokesman (quote according to Reuters).

Reuters earlier today, citing its own sources, claimed that Kozak “made a preliminary agreement” with the Ukrainian authorities at the start of a special operation “that would satisfy Russia’s demand that Ukraine not join NATO.” However, Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the publication, allegedly rejected the proposed agreement.

“Kozak was well positioned to negotiate a peace deal, as from 2020 Putin instructed him to negotiate with Ukrainian colleagues about the Donbass in eastern Ukraine,” the agency noted.

On February 24, Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine. Putin called the protection of the inhabitants of Donbass, as well as the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, its goals. In March, the president emphasized that the decision to conduct a special operation was connected with a “real threat” to Russia, which arose because of Ukraine’s desire to join NATO and statements by the Ukrainian authorities about the possibility of acquiring nuclear weapons.
