The Kremlin called Australia’s decision to cancel the lease on the site where the construction of the Russian embassy was planned to be another unfriendly manifestation. This was stated by the press secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov.
Peskov noted that Australia “diligently continues to move in the wake of the authors of Russophobic hysteria” and is trying to be an excellent student among the countries of the collective West.
“Another unfriendly manifestation from Australia, we will take this into account. And if there are any issues on the agenda that need the principle of reciprocity, we will also behave accordingly,” Peskov warned.
On June 15, it became known that the Australian government will cancel the lease agreement for the site, which was concluded between the countries in 2008. As informs Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Parliament quickly passed legislation today, which was introduced by the government. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attributed the decision to security concerns.
At the Russian Embassy in Canberra declaredthat Australia’s actions are another step by the Albanese cabinet along the path of deliberate and consistent destruction of relations with Moscow. The diplomatic mission promised to analyze the “hostile actions” and respond appropriately.
Previously, Australia had already tried to terminate the contract in the summer of 2022. At that time, the construction in progress of the building for three years from the date of issuance of the permit was called the reason. As a result, the court declared the decision illegal and canceled it.
