An original and rather simple method of neurorehabilitation was developed by the specialists of the Scientific Center of Neurology. They offer to restore fine motor skills and visual-spatial memory of patients with the help of … plastic cups.

Before developing their methodology, the scientists of the center examined most of the simulators that are now used for the rehabilitation of patients. The conclusions were disappointing: some simulators help to restore only fine motor skills, others only help to restore spatial or visual memory, but the main drawback is that the simulators (multi-colored pyramids, cylinders of various shapes and sizes) do not remind patients of anything from their past experience. Therefore, the researchers decided to opt for a simple and well-known object – a plastic cup.

The training set includes cups of the same shape and a set of cards with tasks. At the bottom, all cups are the same, and multi-colored stripes run along the top. The patient’s task is to arrange the cups one into the other as indicated on the card. The task begins with the analysis of the folded pyramid of cups: with a healthy hand, he takes this pyramid, and with the one that needs to be restored, he pulls out cups from it one by one, this contributes to the development of fine motor skills. Then a more difficult task: the patient is given a card on which multi-colored stripes are drawn. He studies it for at least 15 seconds, and then arranges cups from memory so that the sequence of their strips matches the sequence that was indicated on the card. The lesson begins with three cups, then, as the necessary skills are restored, the task becomes more difficult. In principle, you can do without cards, in this case, the specialist calls the patient the sequence of colors that needs to be restored. Practice has shown a rather high efficiency of the methodology developed at the scientific center.
