Pentagon spokesman Kirby dismisses fears of a nuclear ‘Armageddon’

A senior US military official softened predictions of an imminent Russian nuclear threat days after US President Joe Biden warned of a potential nuclear “Armageddon”.
Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser this week, Biden spoke bluntly about the threat of a nuclear attack from Russia. “We haven’t faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis,” the president said. He added that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “wasn’t kidding when he talked about the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons, biological or chemical weapons, because his armed forces can be said to be significantly behind” after the start of the JMD in Ukraine.
Echoing White House comments this week, senior Pentagon official John Kirby said Biden’s comments were not based on specific information.
“His comments were not based on new or recent intelligence or new indications that Putin has made a decision to use nuclear weapons,” Kirby told ABC News this week. “Frankly, we have no information that he made that decision. We also didn’t see anything to make us think about our own strategic nuclear posture.”
