Jessica Pegula, world No.8, easily qualified for the quarter-finals of the US Open, beating Czech Karolina Pliskova (21st) 6-3, 6-2 on Monday in New York. The 28-year-old American reaches this stage for the first time at Flushing Meadows. She will try to do even better on Wednesday against the Polish world N.1 Iga Swiatek or the German Jule Niemeier (108th).

Pegula completely mastered the match, which started a little late on the Arthur Ashe, due to the rain, while the roof of the huge enclosure was closed. Whereupon she broke first. A short-lived advantage, since Kvitova, double Grand Slam winner, each time at Wimbledon (2011, 2014), was able to respond immediately. A short-lived illusion, since Pegula grabbed the serve from the Czech twice more to complete the first set.

At the start of the second set, Kvitova broke to lead 2-0 from the start. But the American wanted to finish it quickly and she did it with a bang by stealing the next three serves from her rival, helped moreover by too many unforced errors from the Czech (24).

Pegula, who also reached the quarters at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros, without yet reaching the last four in a Major, took only 1:09 to win her first victory in three confrontations against Kvitova.
