Pedophiles increasingly use cryptocurrencies to access child pornography

The number of websites accepting cryptocurrencies for child sexual abuse images is more than doubling every year. Such data is provided by the British non-profit organization Internet Watch Foundation, writes Financial Times.
Back in 2018, the IWF identified just 81 sites that accepted cryptocurrencies to pay for access to child pornography. At the end of last year, their number exceeded 1 thousand. In total, the organization discovered about 250 thousand sites with such content.
According to London Metropolitan Police Inspector Darren Young, the popularity of cryptocurrencies among pedophiles is due to the belief that they provide criminals with anonymity. According to the inspector, “virtually all payments related to the sale of materials containing images of child sexual abuse, or online broadcasts of child sexual abuse around the world, are made using cryptocurrencies.”
