Patrushev admitted that the US could default on foreign debt

The United States may soon default on its external debt, said Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, during a video conference speech at consultations with colleagues from the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Secretary of the Security Council noted that the US national debt has exceeded $30 trillion, and Japan is approaching $10 trillion. According to him, such dynamics suggests that soon “these countries will have problems servicing this debt.”
“As a result, Washington will default, as they have already done with respect to obligations to Russia,” Patrushev believes (quote according to TASS). He noted that the financial assets of any state in euros and US dollars “will be simply stolen.”
According to Patrushev, the reason for the rise in food and energy prices in the world lies in the “printing press operating in the USA and Europe.” He drew attention to the fact that during the pandemic there was the largest emission of funds in 40 years. Thus, the US printed $5.9 trillion, and Europe – €2.9 trillion. “Westerners cynically shift the inflationary burden that arises against this background onto developing countries,” Patrushev summed up.
Earlier, Western agencies announced Russia’s default on foreign debt. On June 27, Moody’s reported that Russia had defaulted on Eurobonds by failing to pay $100 million on its external debt. At the same time, the default on sovereign Eurobonds was announced by Bloomberg.
The Kremlin did not agree with this assessment. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Eurobond payment was made in May. He noted that the fact that payments did not reach the recipients due to sanctions is not a reason to declare a default.
