Patriarch Kirill, during the Divine Liturgy in the Patriarchal Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, presented the original icon of the Kazan Mother of God, which was considered lost more than a hundred years ago. All this time, a copy of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was used, which is kept in the Epiphany Cathedral in Elokhov, Moscow.
“This event can be attributed to historical events,” said the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, presenting the original of the miraculous image of the Kazan Mother of God.
He recalled that it was in front of this icon that Pozharsky and Minin prayed. Orthodox believe that this icon saved the Russian people from foreign intervention.
“This image is our national shrine,” added Patriarch Kirill.
The original icon was stolen in 1904 along with the image of the Savior. Then they caught the peasant Stoyan and his wife, who found decorations from the frames of these icons. At the same time, the investigation considered that the icons themselves were burned in the oven. However, then two more versions were put forward. According to one of them, the peasant sold the icon to the Old Believers, and according to the other, it was not the original that was stolen, but a copy of the icon.
