The meeting of Patriarch Kirill with the envoy of the Pope, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, will take place today, June 29, in Moscow. The event will take place in the afternoon, said Archbishop Giovanni d’Aniello, Apostolic Nuncio to the Russian Federation.
According to the RAI News channel, Pope Francis instructed the cardinal to carry out a humanitarian mission. It is also planned to meet with Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.
Earlier, Archbishop Pavel Pezzi, chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Russia, told TASS that the Pope’s special envoy discussed humanitarian issues related to refugees during a meeting with Russian presidential aide for foreign affairs Yuri Ushakov. He also noted that the meeting was constructive.
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who is the chairman of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, arrived in Moscow on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, he began the second phase of his mission. The main purpose of his trip is to make a humanitarian contribution to finding a solution to the tragic situation and achieving a just peace in Ukraine.
Earlier, the Cardinal visited Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and religious figures.
