Patriarch Kirill defrocked Archimandrite of the Russian Orthodox Church Govorun, who condemned the “Russian world”

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ deprived Archimandrite Kirill (Govorun) of his holy rank, reports press service of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). In 2022, he co-authored a declaration of theologians, in which the idea of the “Russian world” was called “false teaching.”
“Based on the decision of the diocesan church court of the Moscow diocese dated October 31, 2023, Archimandrite Kirill (Govorun) is deposed from the priesthood in connection with a violation of the 25th rule of the Holy Apostles,” the Russian Orthodox Church said in a statement. The 25th rule of the Holy Apostles, the violation of which was charged to Cyril (Governor), implies the defrocking of a clergyman convicted of “fornication, or perjury, or theft.”
Archimandrite Kirill (Govorun) held various positions in the Russian Orthodox Church, in the late 2000s he headed the department for external church relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).
In December 2023, the Diocesan Church Court of the Moscow (City) Diocese ruled to deprive Kirill Govorun of the priesthood for serving in Kiev with the clergy of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, with which the Russian Orthodox Church had broken relations “due to a gross invasion of the canonical territory” of the UOC.
In March 2022, Govorun became one of the drafters of a declaration condemning the concept of the “Russian World” and the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
Previously, the Church Court at a meeting decided to defrock the former rector of the Trinity Church in Khokhly, Archpriest Alexei Uminsky. The basis for defrocking was the refusal to carry out the blessing of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, when reading a prayer for Holy Rus’. The patriarch has not yet confirmed the court’s decision.
