Against the backdrop of the attention of the world community to the Ukrainian crisis, there is a threat of destabilization of the situation in the South Caucasus. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan at the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (WEF), the translation of which was conducted on the forum site.
“The times are not easy for our region, too, because challenges that have existed for a long time are emerging or escalating. This is due to the current situation, when the attention of the entire world community, and especially Armenia’s strategic partner in the field of security, the Russian Federation, is focused on the situation around Ukraine. There are specific fears that this could lead to destabilization in the region,” he said.
A similar situation for Armenia already existed in 2020, when Azerbaijan escalated the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, taking advantage of the fact that the attention of the world community and Russia was riveted to the coronavirus pandemic, the Armenian prime minister noted.
Now, according to the Armenian prime minister, there are some forces that seek to present the political leadership of Armenia in Moscow as pro-Western, and in the West as pro-Russian. At the same time, Moscow and Yerevan are in close contact on all issues, Pashinyan added.
“Our relations with Russia have been and remain strategically allied. We hope that this factor will be key for peace and stability in our region,” the Armenian Prime Minister concluded.
On November 9, 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan, mediated by Russia, signed an agreement that put an end to the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh that began on September 27, 2020. Baku and Yerevan agreed on the exchange of prisoners and the bodies of the dead. Under the agreement, the Armenian troops were withdrawn from the region, and the NKR liberated a number of regions that came under the control of Azerbaijan.
The observance of the truce and the security of the Lachin corridor from Armenia to Karabakh until 2025 is monitored by Russian peacekeepers.
