Pashinyan criticized the coat of arms of Armenia – Vedomosti

The coat of arms of Armenia has nothing to do with the republic founded in 1991. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this in parliament.
“What is depicted on our coat of arms? Noah’s ark on Mount Ararat, coats of arms of the four dynasties of Armenia. Recently, when I look at this coat of arms, I have a question: how is the image, which is a shrine for each of us, connected with the state founded in 1991? What is it about? Noah’s Ark is located on Mount Ararat, and today’s territory of the Republic of Armenia is under water. The lion, which in natural conditions has not been in Armenia for a long time, ”- noted Pashinyan (quote from News of Armenia).
The Prime Minister asked those present if he thought about how the image is connected to each family and what it says about the future. According to Pashinyan, the problem he raised reflects “fluctuations between historical and real Armenia.” “Our argument concerns the following: should real Armenia serve historical Armenia, or should historical Armenia serve real Armenia? This is a political and epochal question, the answer to which we must give,” Pashinyan specified.
Mount Ararat, which is depicted on the coat of arms of Armenia, is located within the borders of present-day Turkey. In the 19th century, the territory on which the mountain is located came under the control of the Russian Empire. Then, in 1921, the Bolsheviks signed an agreement with Turkey on the transfer of this area.
