Pashinyan announced the aggravation of the situation on the border with Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has concentrated troops on the border with Armenia and the dividing line with Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced this at a government meeting.

“Over the past week, the military-political situation in our region has deteriorated significantly. The reason is that Azerbaijan has been accumulating troops along the line of contact between Nagorno-Karabakh and the Armenian-Azerbaijani border for several days,” he said (quote according to TASS).

According to Pashinyan, the situation is explosive. He added that Azerbaijan’s actions indicate an intention to commit a new military provocation against Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. The Armenian prime minister called on the international community and UN countries to “take serious measures to prevent a new explosion” in the region.

On May 25, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, through the mediation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussed relations between the two countries in the Kremlin, but did not adopt a joint statement at the end of the day. At the same time, as Aliyev noted, after Armenia’s statements on the recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, the issue of agreeing on the points of the peace treaty will go “much easier.”

At the end of August, Pashinyan declaredthat the situation in the region remains tense. According to him, Yerevan submitted to Baku new proposals on the draft peace treaty.

On September 3, Pashinyan, in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, said that Russia was moving away from the South Caucasus, and Russian peacekeepers did not control the Lachin corridor. In the Kremlin disagreed with the words of the prime minister, emphasizing that the Russian Federation is “an integral part of this region”, and then cannot leave it.
