Pashinyan announced his readiness to sign a “landmark document” with Aliyev

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that he was ready to sign a “landmark document” at a meeting in Granada, Spain, if Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev came there. He stated this during government hour in parliament.

“We confirmed our visit to Granada until the last moment. They were very constructive and optimistic, they believed that there was an opportunity to sign a turning point document, and they assessed this opportunity highly. But it turned out that the planned meeting would not take place through no fault of ours,” clarified he (quote from Interfax).

Pashinyan added that Yerevan did not cancel the visit to Granada. The Armenian delegation plans to hold meetings and present its position in more detail, the Prime Minister specified. He expressed regret that the meeting with Aliyev would not take place.

“But we hope that the conceptual document that is on the table will be signed at a convenient moment. I am ready to sign this document and I regret that tomorrow I will not have the opportunity to say that this very important decision has been made,” Pashinyan emphasized.

Earlier on October 4, Azerbaijani agency APA reportedthat Aliyev refused to participate in a meeting with Pashinyan and representatives of France, Germany and the EU, which will be held in Granada, Spain on October 5. It is clarified that this decision was made in connection with the refusal to allow Turkish representatives to participate in the negotiations, since France and Germany were against it.

Meeting in Granada preceded negotiations between the special envoys of Armenia Armen Grigoryan and Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev on September 26 in Brussels. During the meeting, the parties agreed to take “concrete actions and decisive compromise steps” in all areas of the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement.
