“Partly free”: The State Department evaluated the work of the Ukrainian media in 2022

From the very beginning of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, state-owned and independent media outlets registered in the country faced the need for self-censorship in their materials. They tried to avoid publications that could be regarded as unpatriotic or used by Russia as propaganda. This information is contained in the annual report of the US Department of State on the observance of human rights.
In its report, the State Department noted that the Ukrainian government routinely banned, blocked or sanctioned media outlets and journalists who were considered a threat to national security or criticized the authorities’ position on issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
Freedom House, a non-governmental organization, rated the Ukrainian media as “partially free,” according to the report.
“While independent media and online news outlets continued to be active and express diverse points of view, the government of Ukraine took action to restrict the media and freedom of speech in the name of countering Russian disinformation and other threats to national security during the military conflict,” the report says.
