The Tverskoy District Court of Moscow sentenced poets Yegor Shtovba and Artem Kamardin to five and a half and seven years in prison in a criminal case for reading hate-inciting poetry on Triumfalnaya Square in Moscow.

“The court found them guilty under Articles 280.4 and 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (public calls for activities directed against the security of the state, and actions aimed at inciting hatred or enmity, as well as humiliating the dignity of a person or group of persons) and sentenced Shtovbe to 5 .5 years in prison, and Kamardin – 7 years in prison,” the court’s press service told TASS. Both convicts will serve their sentences in a general regime correctional colony. The day before, December 27, the prosecutor’s office asked sentence Artem Kamardin and Yegor Shtovba to seven and six years in prison, respectively.

As reported by the Telegram channel Sota, after the verdict was announced, Artem Kamardin’s wife Anastasia Popova was detained. Telegram channel Shot reports the detention of its correspondent near the courthouse.

On September 25, 2022, on Triumfalnaya Square in Moscow, near the monument to Vladimir Mayakovsky, poet Artem Kamardin read his poems as part of the Mayakov Readings. Nikolai Daineko and Egor Shtovba also took part in the event. The speakers recited several poems criticizing the military operation in Ukraine. Participants in the Mayakov Readings were detained and placed under arrest by court decision.

The Investigative Committee conducted an examination, which recognized fragments of poems by participants in the readings as “inciting hatred towards Russian volunteers and fighters of the people’s militia of the DPR and LPR.” In particular, Artem Kamardin was accused of reciting an anti-Russian chant and poems about sexual relations with the daughters of those fighting in the Donbass.

In May, one of the defendants in the case, Nikolai Daineko, who admitted guilt and entered into a pre-trial agreement with the investigation, was sentenced to four years in prison.
