Avant-garde artist Boris Zhutovsky has died at the age of 90. This was announced by political scientist Arkady Dubnov on Facebook. The cause of death has not been reported.
Boris Zhutovsky is one of the participants in the exhibition “30 Years of the Moscow Union of Artists” in the Manezh, which took place in December 1962. It was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Moscow branch of the Union of Artists. The exhibition became known for the fact that the leader of the USSR Nikita Khrushchev, who visited it, criticized the work of artists, demanding that they be sent to logging. In 2011, Boris Zhutovsky said that a few years after the incident, Nikita Khrushchev personally apologized to the artist.
One of the most famous works of Boris Zhutovsky is a portrait series of prominent people of Russia and the USSR, consisting of more than 300 paintings. The series includes portraits of human rights activist Andrei Sakharov, poet Bulat Okudzhava, and Nikita Khrushchev.
