The President of the Republic proposes the establishment of a “European contribution” for operators who take advantage of the stratospheric prices of the wholesale electricity market in Europe.

He did not utter the inflammable expression “superprofit taxation”. The President of the Republic has nevertheless opened the door to a device that looks like it furiously. Emmanuel Macron, during his press conference dedicated to energyon Monday, said he was in favor of “a European contribution mechanism” “which would be requested from energy operators” “whose production cost is much lower” at market prices.

Energeticians who produce kilowatt hours with wind turbines, solar panels, nuclear but also with coal, even gas, are currently taking advantage of the stratospheric prices of the wholesale electricity market in Europe to reap substantial profits. If the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, hammers home his hostility to exceptional taxation, claiming not to know what a surplus profit is, the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Bornehad indicated eight days ago “don’t close the door” to such a levy.
