Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) Alexander Bastrykin said “RIA News”that since the introduction of criminal liability for the dissemination of fakes about the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the Investigative Committee has opened 273 cases under this article (Article 270.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

Alexander Bastrykin clarified that out of 273 criminal cases, 134 cases against 136 persons were sent to court. He added that in 2023, 90 criminal cases were initiated under the article on the dissemination of fakes about the RF Armed Forces.

The head of the Investigative Committee also said that 81 criminal cases have been opened for discrediting the use of the RF Armed Forces (280.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). 44 cases against 45 persons have been sent to court under this article, he added.

January 8 Prosecutor General’s Office reportedthat in 2023, prosecutors sent criminal cases to the courts against 70 people accused of spreading fakes about the army. A total of 135 such crimes were registered. 79 criminal cases were sent to the courts, the department said.

A ban on the dissemination of knowingly false information about the RF Armed Forces, as well as on actions aimed at discrediting the Russian army, was introduced into the Criminal Code by federal law of March 4, 2022. In addition, a provision prohibiting discrediting the RF Armed Forces was added to the Code of Administrative Offenses (CAO).
