Forward “Washington” Alexander Ovechkin scored the 787th puck in regular NHL matches and set a record for their number for one team. The record was previously held by Canadian Gordie Howe, who played for the Detroit Red Wings for many years (786 goals for one team, retired in 1980, died in 2016).
Ovechkin was congratulated by Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis. “How blessed are we? Thank you Alex. History is being rewritten,” wrote the American businessman on Twitter.
The 37-year-old Russian takes third place in the list of the best NHL snipers. He is second only to Wayne Gretzky (894) and Gordie Howe (801) in goals. Ovechkin has been with Washington since 2005. He is a three-time champion of Russia (2008, 2012, 2014), winner of the Stanley Cup (2018) and the Gagarin Cup (2013).
