Our review of Everybody Loves Jeanne: And the Romance Was

For his first feature film, Everybody loves Joan , Céline Devaux could not choose. Director and illustrator, she could not let go of her pencil and prevent herself from slipping animation sequences. Let’s get rid of the annoying things. These graphic dots are of little interest. They depict a kind of little black and white ghost, a hairy creature, with or without sunglasses. It is supposed to represent Jeanne’s unconscious. She harasses her, and the spectator with it, uttering aloud what the young woman thinks quietly, between shameful thoughts and sincere opinions. A false good idea, therefore, less original than harmful. No doubt a necessary crutch for a beginner director. Fortunately, these lively and intrusive scenes fade as the story progresses and, finally rid of these dross, Céline Devaux’s first film, presented at the last Cannes Film Festival (Critics’ Week), lets all its sweet charms unfold. bitters and its…
