Oscar Pistorius wants to press ahead with his parole request

South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, sentenced to 13 years in prison for the murder of his partner in 2013, has asked the courts for prison authorities to consider his request for parole, his lawyer said on Wednesday August 31.
The former athlete with a below-knee amputee served more than half of his sentence in July, making him eligible for early release. The procedure in South Africa requires that the convict speak with the victim or his family, which he did by meeting the parents of Reeva Steenkamp in early July.
Oscar Pistorius was found guilty in 2015 of killing the model on Valentine’s Day, by shooting four times through the bathroom door of his ultra-secure Pretoria home. He has always denied the murder, saying he was convinced that a thief had broken into his house.

His lawyer, Julian Knight, told AFP that Mr. Pistorius, now 35, is seeking justice to force authorities to convene a hearing into his parole request. “This is a request to compel the probation committee to agree to a hearing for his parole application.said the lawyer.
