The 20,000 volunteers for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (Nov. 20-Dec. 18), of 155 nationalities, including the 32 qualified, took part in an orientation evening in the final stadium in Lusail, as well as remotely, Friday.

The event was an opportunity to unveil the purple and green outfits they will wear during the tournament. The organizers received more than 500,000 applications which were studied for 6 months to select these volunteers, said the CEO of the Mondial-2022 Nasser Al-Khater. This evening was “an important step for the Lusail stadium, to also test the facilities”, added Al-Khater. The next event on the road to the first World Cup in an Arab country is the official inauguration of the Lusail stadium, north of the capital Doha, on September 9. The 80,000-seat venue will host a match between Saudi Arabian and Egyptian champions Al Hilal and Zamalek, which is expected to be sold out, organizers say.
