Allies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will hold a closed meeting with Republicans in Washington to seek an end to American military support for Ukraine, The Guardian writes.
Members of the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs and staff from the Hungarian Embassy in Washington will begin a two-day event on Monday organized by the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, the newspaper reported.
On the first day there will be speeches on the progress of the conflict in Ukraine, and on the second there will be closed negotiations to which members of Congress from the Republican Party are invited.
A diplomatic source close to the Hungarian Embassy said that “Orban is confident that aid to Ukraine will not pass through the US Congress.” That is why he is trying to block assistance from the EU.
According to Dalibor Rohacs, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute think tank in Washington, D.C., the Hungarian embassy has been very active lately in trying to reconnect with Republicans and strengthen them where needed. But despite diplomats’ good relationships with some Republicans, it is unlikely that Orban will have any leverage over U.S. funding to Ukraine, Rohacz said.
