Ophthalmologist Levkina called the first signs of glaucoma

Oksana Levkina, doctor of the highest category, candidate of medical sciences, ophthalmologist at the European Medical Center, told “Gazete.Ru”how to recognize glaucoma by the first symptoms.

Dr. Levkina noted that in the first stages of glaucoma, a person often does not feel any visual discomfort, however, complaints may appear after visual functions are affected: for example, reduced visual acuity due to increased intraocular pressure or a narrowed field of vision.

In such cases, according to the doctor, people complain of pain, a “veil” before their eyes, a halo around light sources.

In order not to miss glaucoma in the early stages, it is necessary to control intraocular pressure annually, check vision and the condition of the optic nerve head. This is especially true for people who are genetically disposed to this disease.

To prevent progressive glaucoma, you need to choose a treatment method that will most effectively control intraocular pressure and optic nerve function.

Treatment is selected individually, the ophthalmologist noted.

“One is enough drops, other situations require surgical intervention. If an increase in intraocular pressure is detected despite the use of drops, then they switch to surgical methods of treatment,” Levkina said.

In addition, the doctor advised minimally invasive laser surgery for glaucoma – this is the most advantageous position in such a situation.
