Patriarch Kirill said during his sermon that belonging to the Russian people must be accompanied by “deep Orthodox faith.” According to him, only people who visit the temple can call themselves Russians. The sermon took place after the liturgy in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” on Bolshaya Ordynka in Moscow.
“And those who say that we are Russians, but do not go to church, ask yourself the question: “Are you the heirs of your fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, your great-grandfathers and ancestors, who connected their lives with their faith?” And if you are not their heirs, in what sense can you talk about yourself as Russian people?” said the patriarch (quoted from RIA Novosti).
Patriarch Kirill noted that modern Russia is “a stronghold of Orthodoxy in the world.” According to him, now the time has come that “cannot be overslept.” “And the Lord will help us not to miss this fateful time, which is given to all of us, I emphasize once again, to renew our faith, to strengthen our national and religious self-awareness,” he said.
