Onishchenko: Russian employers should vaccinate employees against influenza

An epidemic of the so-called “swine flu” of the H1N1-09 strain begins in Russia. In 25 regions – such as Astrakhan, Bryansk, Vladimir, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg – the epidemic threshold for influenza has been exceeded, the strain has also been isolated in Moscow and other regions. This was announced at a press conference in the National News Service (NSN) by State Duma deputy, long-term chief sanitary doctor of Russia Gennady Onishchenko.
– Hysteria is not needed, but the situation should not be underestimated, – the parliamentarian emphasized. – The end of November, and a convincing increase in the number of cases of influenza is already observed, this is an unfavorable sign. According to average long-term observations, the earlier the rise of the disease with real influenza, and not SARS, begins, the more difficult the process itself is. Add to this the suppressed population immunity as a result of the severe coronavirus pandemic.
Under these conditions, Onishchenko calls for maximum vaccination of the population. In particular, employers should be involved in providing vaccinations. “The H1N1 strain is a fairly severe flu, which can lead to complications such as pneumonia and others,” the deputy stressed. – Therefore, vaccination will save money by increasing efficiency. It needs to be done.”
Successful resistance to influenza requires herd immunity in 80% of the population, Onishchenko added.
